In his traveller's account from 1638, Léon Godefroy affirmed the superiority of Cordouan over the lighthouse at Alexandria: " "Highly renowned tower said to be the eighth wonder of the world [of which the Chronique Bordelaise] spoke as follows: "In 1584, Louis de Foix, royal architect and engineer began to lay the foundations of a new Cordouan tower; built over the old one and paid for by the entire province, it has even replaced the lighthouse at Alexandria as the seventh wonder of the world."
